Coach Mike
Hockey Director and Head Varsity Coach, Mike DiStefano
Biography
Mike is an accomplished hockey coach with decades of playing and coaching experience with youth hockey players in the Chicagoland area. He has served as a Head Coach for multiple organizations and has a consistent track record of building winning teams, developing hockey players across all age groups, and teaching leadership principles among his student athletes. Most recently Mike served as Head Coach of the Chicago Hawks Central States PeeWee and Bantam Teams (2020-present). Prior to that, Mike served as the Head Coach for the Orland Park Vikings Program (from 2012-2020) from Squirt Level to Bantam Level. During his tenure with these programs, Mike won two division championships, a NIHL Championship, A State Championship, and twelve tournament championships. Mike also provides private coaching instruction to players across the Chicago areas across all age groups, including high school athletes, as high as AAA and Major Junior Levels.
Coach Jack
Biography
Jack Shadle has coached at the bantam level for the Chicago Hawks since 2020, responsible for teams such as Bantam NIHL3 and Bantam Central States Prospects. Jack’s coaching repertoire also includes a stint with a PeeWee NIHL Elite team which finished 3rd in the State in 2021. Jack was a lifelong Central States Chicago Hawks player, played for Lyons Township High School and went on to play ACHA Division 1 hockey with Illinois State University. Jack was twice recognized as an ACHA Academic Honors Award recipient while at ISU. Jack’s coaching philosophy will emphasize strong skating technique, team passion, and a personal commitment to training to get the very best out of each player.
Coach Ken
Assistant Varsity Coach, Ken O’Connor
Biography
Ken served as an Assistant Coach for the Chicago Hawks since 2020 including Bantam Central States Prospects, Bantam NIHL3, and Bantam NIHL1, winning four tournament championships during his tenure. Ken played locally with Lyons Township, the Chicago Hawks and Bruins. Ken went on to play college hockey with St. Mary’s University and Iowa State University. Ken was recognized with an ACHA Academic Honors Award while at St. Mary’s. Ken’s coaching philosophies will focus on tough, physical play, strong puck movement, and team chemistry.
Coach Pete
Head JV Coach, Pete Volpe
Biography
Coach Pete has coached youth hockey for over 25 years. He has coached Central States AA for the Chicago Blues, Huskies and Darien Hawks. He has also coaches for Lyons Township High School. Coach Pete is the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Functional Athlete in Countryside, IL. As a player, he played AAA, Junio B, and at the NCAA level for UIC in 1981. He is a level 4 certified coach.
Coach Tim
Assistant JV Coach, Tim Andersen
Biography
Coach Tim has been coaching hockey since 2010. He has coached at the Chicago Hawks, Lyons Townnship at the Varsity/JV level and JV for Hindsdale Central. In the off-season, Coach Pete, as an outdoorsman, likes to hunt and fish.
Coach Jared
Goalie Coach, Jared Shadle
Biography
Jared's playing career included the Chicago Hawks and was a 4-year goalie playing Division 2 at Illinois State University. Jared was President of Illinois State's Hockey Program in 2021 and excelled academically making Dean's List from 2020-2022. Jared mentored three Division 1 goalies as a senior at Illinois State, as well as experience in coaching Chicago Hawks goalies starting in 2018. Jared worked under Ross McKay with the Hawks organization during weekly goalie instruction and many of his coaching philosophies have been honed through that experience. In Jared's own words, his coaching philosophies for his goalies include: "Never giving up on a puck, active legs and hands, leading with the stick, short term memory on goals given up, and playing for the love of the game."

I play forward and defense for Eagles Hockey Club.  My favorite memory was spending with my hockey friends, especially in Nashville.   We would go miles on electric scooters and it was so fun, even though we lost a close game in the Championship!

I play Forward - Right Wing.  I have been playing hockey for around 7-8 years.  My favorite memory is when I played with the Hawks and we went to Tampa last year for a tournament.   My inspiration to play hockey came from watching my brother play a while ago.  I always thought it was a fun sport to watch and play.

I have been playing hockey for about 6 years.  My all time favorite memory happened in Pittsburgh in Feb 2020.  In the semi-finals of our game, I scored a game winning goal on a breakaway with 1.5 seconds left in the game.  My favorite inspirational quote is from an unknown author - "It's not how big you are, it's how big you play!".

I play defense for Eagles Hockey Club.   I have been playing for over 10 years including for Arctic Fury and Darien Hawks.   My favorite memory is when I sliced my ankle open during a playoff game, taped it with stick tape, and finished with a win!   Then went to the ER for 5 stitches.   But it was well worth it!
